The Rise Above Fest
If there is one end of summer event that is not to be missed, it is The Rise Above Fest founded by Seether. Joining Seether are fellow rockers Buckcherry, Puddle of Mudd, Black Stone Cherry and Otherwise. While the name of the festival derives from one of Seether's hit songs "Rise Above This"" both the song and the festival have much more meaning to the band, especially lead singer Shaun Morgan. The song itself was originally written to bring Shaun's younger brother Eugene Welgemoed out of his depression. Sadly Eugene ended his own life at a very young age before getting to hear the song he inspired.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds. The Rise Above Fest's mission is to raise awareness to the ever growing threat of teenage suicide. Several local and national charitable foundations will be invited to educate and help prevent teenage suicide with a portion of the proceeds going to support the community of Gilford, NH. The Rise Above Fest will raise money for NAMI NH(National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Hampshire), a multi-faceted organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of persons of all ages affected by mental illness or serious emotional disorders through education, support and advocacy.
In addition to the top name national acts uniting for the cause, there will be several local and regional acts performing. The acts will also compete for a coveted opening spot on the main stage. The Rise Above Fest is guaranteed to be a day of music, positivity and education in support of a good cause that the whole family can enjoy.
Hailing from South Africa and comprising members Shaun Morgan (vocals, guitar), Dale Stewart (bass), and John Humphrey (drums), Seether embraces a brand of heavy metal mostly associated with the post-grunge era of alternative music, complete with crunchy distortion and brooding textures. The band emerged in 1999 as Saron Gas (a name taken from the back of a sound effects CD) and released their debut album, Fragile, the following year on Musketeer Records. In a country whose musical tastes center around pop and indigenous music, Fragile found impressive chart success. Across the Atlantic, the U.S.-based Wind Up Records caught wind of the band's growing popularity and signed the South African bandmates, who changed their name to Seether in light of Saron Gas's similarity to the lethal nerve agent sarin gas.
An EP release and a spot on the Ozzfest tour preceded the unveiling of Seether's full-length debut in the summer of 2002. Issued that August, Disclaimer featured the modern rock single "Fine Again" and led to a year-long tour. But while the tour time ensured increasing commercial status for Seether, it also delayed the band's return to the studio. In March 2004, a few tracks appeared on the Punisher soundtrack, including a duet version of Disclaimer's "Broken" featuring vocal contributions from Amy Lee. Disclaimer II appeared that June, pairing a handful of new tracks with remixed or re-recorded versions of the previous album's tracks. Seether viewed the album as an opportunity to re-evaluate their debut's release (whose mix was, according to the band, subpar) and gave listeners new content as a holdover until the band's proper follow-up. The promised sophomore effort, Karma and Effect, was released in May 2005 and entered the Top Ten, while the acoustic CD/DVD package One Cold Night appeared in 2006. Seether returned in 2007 with Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, introducing the album with the snide and catchy single "Fake It." In 2009 the band took a break from touring to head into the studio with producer Brendan O'Brien to work on their fifth album. The band went back out on the road for another year before eventually releasing Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray in 2011.
Buckcherry exude a sleazy, sexy hard rock vibe that pays homage to classic rock ‘n’ roll tenets: decadence, excess and loose women. Formed in 1995 by frontman Josh Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson in Los Angeles, Buckcherry offer the same danger and strip-club titillation of an earlier L.A. band, Guns N’ Roses.
Buckcherry’s 1999 debut, simply titled Buckcherry, established the groundwork for the band’s musical style. Drawing from Guns N’ Roses and also old-school L.A. punk, but with a more radio-friendly sheen, Buckcherry trafficked in unapologetically good-time rock, a respite from the angst that had dominated most ‘90s bands. The opening track “Lit Up,” Buckcherry’s biggest hit, celebrated cocaine with revving riffs, and the rest of the album followed its lead in embracing hedonism without reservation. The album eventually went gold.
After the release of their sophomore album Time Bomb, Buckcherry went on hiatus, and the core members pursued other interests.
When Buckcherry reunited officially for their third album, 2006’s 15, Todd and Nelson had parted ways with the rest of the original lineup. 15 proved to be an impressive comeback that ran the gamut of radio formats. “Crazy Bitch” was a hard-stomping sex song supported by a highly suggestive video, while “Sorry” was a sad-eyed acoustic ballad. Spawning a total of five singles, 15 went platinum in the United States and reaffirmed Buckcherry’s commercial standing.
After releasing their first live album, Live & Loud 2009, in 2009, Buckcherry returned on August 3, 2010 with All Night Long, their fifth studio album. Leading off with the title-track single, the record emphasized hard-rock tunes, but the album also made room for the ballads “I Want You” and “Bliss.”
Puddle of Mudd
Puddle of Mudd are led by vocalist and guitarist Wes Scantlin. He had started an earlier incarnation of the band in the ‘90s and had put out a few independent records, but after that group fell apart, he met Fred Durst, the frontman for Limp Bizkit, who had just started his own label, Flawless. Signed to Flawless, Puddle of Mudd set out to make their major-label debut.
In 2001, Puddle of Mudd released Come Clean. The reviews almost unanimously derided the album for its derivativeness – the band aped ‘90s bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains, and Scantlin’s vocals were eerily reminiscent of Kurt Cobain’s from Nirvana. Of course, those similarities were exactly what endeared Puddle of Mudd to so many fans, and the album eventually went triple-platinum, boosted by the self-effacing single “She Hates Me.” Clearly, this was music that demonstrated that grunge would continue to be a viable musical form in the new century.
In early 2009, former guitarist Paul Phillips rejoined the Kansas City rockers and in December the band unleashed "Volume 4: Songs In The Key Of Love & Hate" which made it only to the #95 niche on the all-genre Billboard 200 listing. The first single, "Spaceship", peaked at #16 on The Rock Songs chart and its follow-up, "Stoned", grabbed a #22 spot on the same chart.
Puddle Of Mudd’s newest release Re:(disc)overed is an entirely different kind of endeavor for the group, which has been churning out its own material since Wesley Scantlin formed the band nearly 20 years ago in Kansas City, MO. This time the Mudd men have put down their pens in favor of recording 11 of their favorite rock songs of all time - classics by the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, the Steve Miller Band, AC/DC, Elton John and many others. Some are perfectly in character; others are surprising. But ultimately Re:(disc)overed is Puddle of Mudd getting to both show and explore some different sides of its musical makeup.
Black Stone Cherry
Southern rockers Black Stone Cherry originally hailed from a small rural town in south central Kentucky. According to bandmembers, none of whom were born before 1983, the lack of anything to do in their hometown, coupled with a rich musical background in their community and families, led them to start playing music. Lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Robertson met drummer John Fred Young (the son of Kentucky Headhunters' Richard Young) in school, and the two played music together throughout high school. In June of 2001, Black Stone Cherry officially formed with guitarist Ben Wells and bassist Jon Lawhon. They began holding shows at clubs in the area, and after a short while they gained a large following of people of all ages in the town. The band recorded its first album for In de Goot/Roadrunner Records, and after returning from the recording session, Black Stone Cherry held a homecoming concert at the local high school. Their self-titled debut album was released in July of 2006, followed by Folklore and Superstition in 2008. The fiery rockers’ third album, 2011's Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Howard Benson (Daughtry, Three Days Grace).
