Steve Azar
He’s a little country, a little rock and a whole lotta Delta Blues. With his charismatic smile, brooding eyes and soulful lyrics, Steve Azar has a sound and style unlike any other. He was born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi. Steve cut his musical teeth behind his dad’s liquor store sitting on a milk crate listening to the bluesy tunes of Sonny Boy Nelson. An emotional songwriter was born.
Steve graduated from Delta State University while touring with a band he put together. He became a regional headliner playing the biggest clubs in The Delta; a regular on the college campus circuit and each and every Blues Festival in Mississippi. Azar decided to try his luck and moved to Nashville. Within days he had many song publishing contracts. He began working on his own songs, writing with many of the Nashville great songwriters and developing his unique way of storytelling that is pure Azar style and led to some classic hits over the next few years.
Steve’s first “real” recording deal with Mercury Nashville came in 2002. His full length release, “Waitin’ on Joe,” really put Steve on the country map. “I Don’t Have To Be Me ‘til Monday,” the weekend-loving living fancy-free anthem, was the first release off the record and reached #2 on the country charts. It is a power recurrent at radio today and is one of the top 5 most requested songs of the last decade on country radio. The next single was the title track from the record, “Waitin’ On Joe,” which became a Top 10 radio hit and reached #1 on the CMT video charts.
In 2007 Azar was personally chosen by Bob Seger to open his U.S. tour, which was ranked by Pollstar Magazine as the #1 tour in America for 2007. In 2009 Slide on Over Here was released and represented a new chapter in Steve’s musical journey. Off of his own independent label, “Moo La Moo” was the first single from the 13 track effort and both the song and the video enjoyed chart success, catapulting Azar back into the Top 40 on the country charts. “Sunshine” soon followed and won not only critical praise, but set a record for the highest charting song from a true independent label on the Billboard charts. It achieved Top 20 success on all country radio charts and remained active for nearly 40 weeks; a proud accomplishment for both Steve and his young label.
In fall of 2011 Steve released Delta Soul Volume One, a personal collection of songs that are an exceptional mix of Delta Blues and Rock. His Delta roots can be heard mixed with blues, rock and soul, and a touch of twang to create his sound, “Delta Soul.” It is a collection of songs written to take you through Steve’s musical journey through his life in the Mississippi Delta in true Azar form.
